“In contrast to the icy majesty of the stepmother, the stepsisters Anastasia and Drizella (a play off ‘Drusilla, Caligula’s sister) are broadly comic figures. The;y are selfish, conceited, imperious, and, at times, vicious.
“But most of their scenes are played for laughs: they mangle ‘Oh Sing Sweet Nightingale’ (making even Lucifer cover his ears), prace like performing ponies at the ball, and have faces that could stop a sundial.” Solomon, A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes, p. 60
“How did those girls come from the stepmother? They look like different species,’ laughs Ruben Aquino. ‘As long as the rules of the universe in the film are consistent, you buy the differences in design. It’s not like you [p.60] suddenly have one character that defies gravity and does all these cartoony things and another is rotoscoped. They all are caricatures to different degrees, partly depending on the design. The stepsisters were caricatured more broadly, but the animators still followed the same rules, so you buy them in part o the same animated world.’
“The stepsisters were animated by Ollie Johnston, an artist usually associated with warmer, gentler characters: Flora and Fauna in Sleeping Beauty and Rufus in The Rescuers.” Solomon, A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes, pgs. 60 – 61.
” ‘The stepother’s purpose in the film requires her to be more realistic in design because Tshe has to be a believable characer that you relate to on the level of a real human being.’ The same with Cinderella and the Prince,’ explains Haycock. ‘The stepsisters, the King, and the Grad Dauke are largely comic characters,’ ” Solomon, A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes, p. 61.
